With the cooperation of the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency, SEMEC, State Insurance Supervision Service, National Bank, Communications Commission and National Food Agency of Georgia International Consumer Protection Day was celebrated on March 15 in Batumi City.
The event to mark the consumer protection day was attended by the first persons of regulatory agencies, the Autonomous Republic of Adjara government city. It was also attended by the representatives of Batumi City Hall, academic and non-governmental sector, students and professors of Shota Rustaveli State University.
It is to be added that the Chairman of the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency of Georgia, Irakli Lekvinadze summed up the results of the events carried out within the framework of the Consumer Protection Week held between March 11 and 15 and spoke about the importance of informing citizens about consumer rights.
David Narmania Chairman of SEMEC stated that “each citizen must be informed about his rights in the energy and water supply sectors as well as in other sectors. The international week organized by six regulatory commissions serves to raise awareness of citizens about consumer rights. Please be reminded that as per EU directives, the process of reforming the energy market is underway which takes into account an active and informed consumer. Once market liberalization is complete, consumers will have the ability to choose between electricity and natural gas service companies”.
As per David Onofrishvili the head of the State Insurance Service of Georgia, ” This day has essential significance for the effective protection of consumer rights as well as the existence of a modern legislative base, as well as informing the consumer of his rights on the base. Each user needs to know whom or how to apply to protect his rights”.
It is to be added that during the week meetings with customers were held on March 12 in Gurjaani, March 14 in Kutaisi, and finally on March 15 – International Consumer Protection Day – in Batumi.
Notably, people from the regulatory agencies, members of parliament, central and regional governments, representatives of business, academic and non-governmental sectors participated in the events planned during the week.
