Georgia: A newly carved brass cross named after George was opened on the dome of the Alaverdi Cathedral on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
The cross was produced under the direct leadership of the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia, and project works led this process.
Representatives of the National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia and the bronze artists Oleg Gelashvili and Paata Gelashvili attended the blessing of the cross by the Metropolitan of Abba Alaverdi, Bishop David (Makharadze), and the lifting of the cross by architect-restorers.
According to the project, a mockup was made based on a mold into which a brass cross was poured. The cross-casting was carried out under the supervision of architect-restorers.
In the coming days, the orphans broken in the lower parts of the dome will be repaired, after which the copper tire will be installed.
The public may be informed that on June 25 of this year, a vital element damaged the tin cover of the dome of Alaverdi; mainly, the element covered the dome of the church. In other areas, the climate roof was damaged, the mirrors of the western side of the cathedral and the dome were broken, the tinsel roofs of the bell tower and the Episcopal House were destroyed, as well as the balcony of the palace collapsed, a cross fell from the dome of the cathedral, and the infrastructure was damaged in the surrounding area.
According to the agreement with the Eparchy of Alaverdi, the agency has arranged in shortest time both the cathedral (including the dome) and the entire perimeter of the Episcopal House to enable specialists to work full-time.
