UK: British Premier Boris Johnson said on Friday indicated that there may be no swift end to the ongoing war in Ukraine because of the stiff resistance to Russia’s invasion.
“The sad thing is that is a realistic possibility,” he told reporters when asked if he agreed with defence intelligence assessments that war may go until the end of next year.
On his two day tour to India to bolster bilateral ties, Johnson stated Russian President Putin had made a “catastrophic blunder” in ordering the invasion.
“The only option he now has actually is to continue to try to use his awful grinding method,” he added.
“What the Ukrainians want, and what I believe they will receive today,” he said, “is a collection of security guarantees from like-minded nations, as well as security commitments about what we can do to back them up.”
This might involve weaponry, training, and intelligence sharing, all of which could help Ukraine deter Russian aggression in the future.
Moreover, Johnson also stated that the United Kingdom intends to reopen its embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, next week and is considering reinforcing allies who have delivered arms to Ukraine.
Days before Russia invaded Ukraine; the British government announced that its embassy in Kyiv would be temporarily relocated, with employees working out of a diplomatic facility in Lviv.
Furthermore, Russia denotes its invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine. Kyiv and its Western allies deny that as a false pretext for an illegal war of aggression.
Johnson also stated that the UK was looking at what it might do to help countries such as Poland strengthen their military equipment so that they could deploy more powerful weapons to Ukraine.
He added, “We are looking at deploying tanks to Poland to assist them as they send some of their T-72s (tanks) to Ukraine.”
