Georgia is the first Eastern European country to host the global meeting of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Council. Seventy representatives of the Green Climate Fund visited Tbilisi from October 23 to October 26, 2023. Meetings were held with the Georgian Government and representatives of international organisations.
The international delegation also went to the Kakheti region to the Khodashni River. It inspected the flood-protected dams built within the framework of the Green Climate Fund, the UN Development Program.
Gabioni (2.5 km long) is a vital rubble that protects three villages of Kakheti from floods and waterfalls. Members of the delegation spoke with residents, community organizations and schools to better understand the challenges on the ground.
Georgia is the first country in Eastern Europe to host the Board Meeting of the Green Climate Fund. It is the world’s largest donor, dedicated to supporting developing nations in achieving their climate objectives.
From October 23 to October 26, 2023, Tbilisi welcomed seventy (70) high-level representatives from the Green Climate Fund, gathering to engage in vital discussions with the Georgian Government and international partners on our shared commitment to combat climate change.
As a remarkable highlight, GCF delegates travelled to the Kakheti region to see progress in flood protection works along the Khodashnis Khevi River. There, a 2.5 km-long gabion structure shields three villages from the devastating impacts of floods and flash floods. Guests met with residents and representatives of schools and community-based organizations to get firsthand information about climate challenges faced by people in this region.
The GCF partnership with UNDP and the governments of Georgia, Sweden, and Switzerland drives a US$74 million program in Georgia. They are supporting the country in reshaping its national climate action. This vital initiative bolsters resilience against climate-induced disasters, ensuring a sustainable, climate-resilient future for all.
