On this occasion the representatives of the municipalities of the Kakheti region and the business and non-governmental sectors received detailed information about the new water resource management law.

Speaking on the occasion First Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili emphasized the significance of the new water resource management law stating that “In the light of climate change the management of water resources and reform in this direction have gained a special importance to the country. The law on water resources management was passed last year and will come into force in the year 2026. Therefore the state has very important work to do in this direction”.

“This is one of the first laws that will involve local government at the municipal level in the decision-making process because local government knows best what problems are facing the region. The role of municipalities is fundamental and very important,” said Nino Tandilashvili.

It is also to be noted that the forum was held within the framework of the United States Agency for Development (USAID) Economic Governance Program. The NGO Environment and Development promotes the Implementation of Water Resources Management Law Requirements and spreads Awareness in Municipalities of Georgia.

Notably the Parliament of Georgia approved a new law on water resources management developed by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture in 2023. The law considers important changes in the country’s water resources management.

The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and the Committee for Environment and Natural Resources of the Parliament of Georgia are actively working to introduce the new law for local governments to ensure effective water management in the country as well.
