Georgia: Prosecutor office official meets NGO’s representatives

The Deputy Prosecutor General of Georgia and the heads of structural divisions of the Prosecutor’s Office held a meeting with the NGO’s representative.

The meeting was held on the initiative of the Prosecutor’s office where representatives of non-governmental organisations working on human rights protection issues met the
officials from the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Natia Merebashvili who opened the meeting discussed the importance and challenges . He also discussed measures for the cooperation with non-governmental organisations. These NGOs are working to protecting the rights of people with disabilities and violence against women, sexual crimes, and crimes motivated by intolerance.

Salome Shengelia expressed his views here along with the head of the Department of Human Rights Protection of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia,and the deputy head of the Department of Supervision and Strategic Development of Prosecutorial Activities, Londa Bichikashvili.

They apprised the attendees on violence against women, sexual crimes, crimes motivated by intolerance, femicide, gender-based violence against women and the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities. Both sides discussed the current issues and challenges of the activities carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office.

The representatives of the non-governmental organization also shared their views and the problems they have to face. The participants also underlined the importance of a uniform practice and a victim-oriented approach to the mentioned category of crimes.

The discussion further touched upon the challenges in the direction of the procedural leadership of criminal cases, criminal prosecution, supporting the state prosecution in court, ways to solve them, and the importance of introducing uniform approaches. During the framework of the meeting, joint events have been planned for the future as well.

it is to be specifically mentioned that Protecting human rights is a priority of the prosecutor’s office to increase the effectiveness of prosecutorial activities across the country. The prosecutor’s office official also said that meetings with representatives of the non-governmental sector will continued in the future as well.
