Georgia: On Mariam Giorgobiani’s anniversary, the Georgian Ministry of Culture and Sports congratulates her as president of the Figure Skating Federation.

Mariam Giorgobiani started training in figure skating at the age of six and participated in beginner, beginner, and youth stages both in Georgia and throughout the Soviet Union. 

At the age of ten, the athlete became the champion of Georgia. He ended his skating career at the age of seventeen due to an injury, but soon, he returned to the skating rink as a coach.

2010 Mariam Giorgobiani was elected president of the Georgian Figure Skating Federation. During his presidency, Georgian figure skaters won several historical victories.

At the international championships, skaters of the Georgian national team and Adjara Autonomous Republic, under the leadership of Mariam Giorgobiani, received 204 medals: 90 gold, 70 silver, and 44 bronze. 

One of the victories is the gold medal Anastasia Gubanova received at the European Championship in 2023. Anastasia Gubanova became the first athlete in Georgian figure skating history to celebrate the European championship. 

Notably, Gubanova won a silver medal at the continental championship in 2024. In 2024, the sports couple Luka Berulava and Anastasia Metelkina won the silver medal for the first time in history.

Georgian skaters also received three bronze medals in the continental championship in the girls (2012, 2014) and boys (2020) categories. Among Georgia’s figure skating achievements are two World Championship victories in the youth couples category (2024, 2024) and two World Cup victories in the sport dances (2019) and couples categories (2024).

It is noteworthy that, for the first time in history, at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the Georgian team competed with the ten strongest teams in the world and took sixth place.

Under Mariam Giorgobiani’s leadership, Salome Chigogidze and Yulia Levushova received international category referee licenses in 2011 and 2021, which allowed Georgia to join the referee brigade at the highest-level international skating events.
