Georgia: The famous Georgian actress Lia Eliava will turn 90 on May 29, 2024. The Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia honors her memory and her significant contribution to the development of Georgian art.
Lia Eliava was born in Tbilisi in 1934. His parents were victims of Soviet repression: his father was shot, and his mother relocated.
Lia Eliava was studying at the acting faculty of Shota Rustaveli Theater Institute (a. Dvalishvili’s workshop), then he named Moscow A. Lunacharsk Theater Institute (1955).
For the first time, he appeared on the screen in the movie Conquerors of the Dead (D. Rondel, 1951) and had roles in films such as Bashi Achuki (L. Esakia, 1956, sun and moon) and Shadow on the Road (D. Rondel, 1957, Nino). He brought great popularity.
Since the 1950s, Lia Eliava has become a star of Georgian cinema and played several memorable stage roles. The audience, enslaved by her beauty, followed her favorite actor, asked for autographs, and resembled characters seen in the cinema.
Her on-screen characters portrayed loyalty and sacrifice, while the actress’s eye-catching beauty and incredible gentleness gave them a unique charm. The 1970s Polish magazine “Screen” named Lia Eliava the most beautiful European actress of the year.
Lia Eliava established herself on the screen as an actress of the lyrical-romantic genre, creating faces of women from different eras, social circles, and destinies, whose character motif is an uncompromising purity of feelings. Notable among them: Ketevan (“Woman’s Burden,” n. Sanishvli, 1957), Zeinab (“Mamluk,” D, Rondel, 1958), Eliko Gelovani (“Suspended Song,” N. Sanishvili, 1960), Irma (“Chiakokona,” I. Kavtaradze, 1961), Leila (“Children of the sea,” k. Pipinashvili, 1964), Ketevan (“I see the sun,” L. Ghogoberidze, 1965), NATO (“Spring will come soon,” o. Abesadze, 1967), Melita (“The city wakes up early”, s. Dolidze, 1967) and others.
