The Georgian government is working round the clock to preserve heritage sites. Preparatory works for the installation of a new curtain on the west window (stoa) of the Alaverdi Cathedral continue.
The work is being done under the supervision of specialists and the removal of cement tension under the tile roof on the west window (stoa) of the temple continues. Till now the removal of the tile roof of the episcopal house of the Alaverdi monastery complex has been completed. Scaffolding is being done on both the south and north facades of the temple and the process will be completed in the next few days.
The other work includes the design works of the dome, gate-bell tower and episcopal house of St. George’s Cathedral. After the completion of the works the experts will be able to develop the rehabilitation methodology.
It is to be specifically mentioned that as a result of the disaster of June 25 the tin cover of the dome of the Alaverdi Cathedral was damaged, the lorfin stones were broken in various places of the northern skirt the tile roof was damaged in the rest of the places, the windows of the western side of the cathedral and the dome were broken.
Similalrlty the tin roofs of the bell tower and the bishop’s house were damaged and the balcony of the palace was demolished from the dome , cross fell down and the infrastructure of the surrounding area was damaged.
Meanwhile in agreement with the representatives of the Alaverdi Diocese and the agency the construction of the scaffolding around the temple has been started and is continuing so that the specialists can work in full capacity.
According to the information received so far, the construction material for 4500 sq.m. was sent to Alaverdi along with scaffolding material. As is known to the public on June 26 the Minister of Culture and Sports of Georgia Tea Tsulukiani together with the General Director of the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia Nikoloz Aznaurashvili arrived in Alaverdi and familiarized herself with the ground leval situation.
