National Guard of Georgia celebrates its 33rd anniversary

Georgia: The National Guard of Georgia, the first Georgian military formation, celebrated its 33rd anniversary on December 20, 2023. The National Guard has played a vital role in the defence and security of Georgia, from the struggles for independence in the 1990s to the war with Russia in 2008.

The National Guard was established on December 20, 1990, by the law passed by the Supreme Council of Georgia, the first democratically elected parliament of the country.

The National Guard was composed of volunteers ready to defend their homeland from Soviet aggression. The National Guard also served as the basis for the formation and development of the current Georgian Defence Forces.

The National Guard faced many challenges and hardships in the 1990s as civil wars and separatist conflicts engulfed Georgia. The National Guard was, in fact, the central core of the Georgian Armed Forces, fighting for the unity and integrity of Georgia.

The National Guard also participated in the peacekeeping operations in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as in the international missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2008, the National Guard once again proved its courage and loyalty as it took part in the war with Russia, which invaded Georgia and occupied parts of its territory.

The National Guard suffered heavy casualties but also inflicted significant damage on the enemy forces. The National Guard also helped the civilian population, providing humanitarian aid and evacuation.

Since 2003, the National Guard has undergone a significant reorganization, following the recommendations of the US State Guard, General Poitris and the US European Army. The reorganization resulted in the abolition of the permanent combat units, heavy weapons and equipment, which were transferred to the regular military units.

The National Guard also shifted its focus to preparing the armed forces reserves, organizing and conducting combat drills, conducting support and security operations during military operations, recruiting citizens for the defence forces, and supporting civilian authorities during war and emergencies.

The National Guard of Georgia is a proud and respected institution with a history of service and sacrifice for the nation. The National Guard continues to uphold its motto: “For the Homeland, for the Freedom, for the Honor”.

The National Guard also strives to maintain its traditions and values and improve its capabilities and readiness. The National Guard of Georgia is a reliable and professional partner for the Georgian Defence Forces, international allies, and friends.
