Law enforcers fine pollution-emitting vehicles

The Republic of Georgia's Department of Environment Supervision has launched a dedicated drive against polluting vehicles and issued challan to number of vehicle owners.

The Republic of Georgia’s Department of Environment Supervision has launched a dedicated drive against polluting vehicles. Many vehicles were fined for violating the country’s pollution norms.

The fresh drive started on September 4, 2023 and till now allmost 3,243 violators have been fined for non-conformity with emission standards. It is to be specifically mentioned that starting from September 4, 2023, employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision have checked the pollution of vehicles in four main cities and fined the owners.These four cities include Tbilisi, Rustavi, Kutaisi, and Batumi.

It is to be added that since the law was enacted 3243 legal and natural persons have been fined . The department’s moving crews caught these polluting vehicles for non-conformity with the established norm for motor vehicle emissions.

The department employees issued a large number of challans, including 1502 in the name of drivers/owners of moving vehicles in Tbilisi. Similarly 707 violations were recorded in Kutaisi, 564 in Batumi, and 470 in Rustavi respectively.

At the same time out of 3243 penalty receipts 2785 receipts were issued in the name of the individual. On the other hand in 458 cases employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision fined legal entities.

It is also to be noted that a total number of 1893 penalty bill were issued against drivers of light cars,1164 against minibuses, 185 against trucks, and 1 against bus driver.

It is worth mentioning that in case of non-conformity with the legal norm of the emission of motor vehicles, there is a provision of fine for different amounts.

In the case of a natural person the fine is 100 GEL for the first time 300 GEL for the second time and 600 GEL for the third time violation. In the case of a legal entity the amount of fine is 500, 1500 and 3000 GEL. If the fine is paid within ten days the amount of the fine will be reduced by 20%; otherwise, violators have to pay the full amount.

Any Citizen can check the amount of fines on the official website of the Department of Environmental Supervision. Moreover citizens can pay the fine through the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The department representative also advised people to follow the rules and regulations to avoid penality.

Meanwhile authorities are also planning to organise an awareness campaign about the ill effects of pollution on the environment of the country.
