Georgia: Fourth plenary meeting held on circular economy

A dedicated fourth plenary meeting was held to guide the nation in its transition to Georgia’s circular economy. Solomon Pavliashvili   the deputy minister of environment protection and agriculture  attended the meeting.

 

Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Solomon Pavliashvili  while addressing the attendees  spoke about the importance of creating a national guide for the transition to a circular economy to discuss all the details in this direction.

 

Minister added  “Circular economy is a waste management platform that we have been actively working on for the last 4 years. Of course  we have many challenges in the implementation part however we will move forward step by step. The guiding document for the transition to the circular economy will be the basis of the national strategy. The program will be written in the guide and the measures will be determined for future course of action.”

Notably  environmental pollution and climate change are global challenges today. However with the creation of the European “Green Agreement ” the European Union established new approaches to tackle these challenges, which are shared by Georgia and gradually introduced in a number of other countries of the region as well.

 

It is also worth mentioning that the transition to a circular economy requires fundamental, systematic changes in the methods of production and consumption  which requires introducing a sound policy and regulatory framework. In order to promote the transition to the circular economy  the Government of Georgia has started to develop the national circular economy guide which is a strategic plan. This guide outlines the long-term vision and key initiatives needed to achieve it. The guide is based on the EU Circular Economy Action Plan 2020  a key part of the Green Deal.

The fourth plenary meeting dedicated to the national guide for the transition to the circular economy of Georgia was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia as well as the Union of Nature Researchers of Georgia “Orkis”, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with the financial support of the Swedish government.
