Tbilisi: A spokesperson for the European Union revealed that the EU can end visa-free entry to Georgia. The visa-free agreement was executed between the EU and Georgia almost seven years ago, in 2017.
The EU spokesperson specifically added, “We are ready to adopt any measure against Georgia as a reaction to developments in the Republic of Georgia.” A media house quoted that spokesperson as clarifying that all the options against Georgia are on the table.
So if the ruling regime under the Georgian Dream party continues its undemocratic actions to suppress public opinion we will not hesitate to take any strict action.
It is worth noting that under the Visa-free agreement between the Republic of Georgia and the European Union signed in 2027, any citizen from Georgia can avail of visa-free entry into European Union’s member countries.
Moreover under this agreement Georgian people can live here for a minimum of three months to a maximum of one year.
This agreement was appreciated by all the countries of the region as a tangible and significant development. It has benefited many citizens from Georgia who were waiting for ease of visa norms to visit EU countries.
The spokesperson further stated “The visa-free agreement makes Georgia responsible for taking measures to protect fundamental rights without any bias. It also requires Georgia to adopt any law necessary to protect the civil rights of the public.”
As per the spokesperson, the assessment plan for visa-free entry is in the pipeline and we will make sure Georgia follows all the rules and regulations to stop the decline of democratic values.
The EU used to review the agreement every year to ensure the fulfilment of its provisions from Georgia. The question of Fundamental rights is the basis of this agreement.
The spokesperson has stated that consultations have already taken place between the foreign ministers of EU member states.
Any potential move to ban visa-free travel is seen as a measure to protect democratic values. Georgia set to hold parliamentary elections next month, this statement created buzz the country’s political circles.
