Georgia: An event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the legendary Georgian tennis player Alexander Metreveli was held in the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia.

First Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Shalva Gogoladze, Chairman of Tbilisi City Council Giorgi Tkemaladze, President of the Olympic Committee Leri Khabelov, representatives of National Sports Federations and Sports Society, veteran athletes, family members of Alexander Metreveli and friends were present.

Shalva Gogoladze congratulated Alexander Metreveli on his 80th birthday and thanked him for his unique contribution to the development of Georgian tennis. At the event, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze read his congratulations. Alexander Metreveli was also congratulated by the legendary Czech tennis player Jan Kodesh and the famous Greek tennis player Stefano Tsitsipas.

Aleksander Metreveli is the only tennis player from the former Soviet Union to play in the finals of Wimbledon three times—in 1973 in singles and 1968 and 1970 in doubles. He was the world’s ninth mogul. The Georgian tennis player is a 16-time European champion in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

The legendary athlete is a participant in 33 Grand Slam tournaments. From 1963 to 1980, he played 105 times and won 80 in the Davis Cup.

Aleksander Metreveli is a knight of the Order of Honor. In 2015, during the Wimbledon tournament, the president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) awarded him a special Davis Cup medal.

Alexander Irakliyevich Metreveli is a retired Soviet tennis player of Georgian background. He is an honorary citizen of Australia. His grandson Aleksandre Metreveli, a professional tennis player, has represented Georgia in the Davis Cup. He was active from 1962 to 1980 and won 62 singles titles.
