Exhibition of painter Mai Mkhithariani opens in house of Hovane Tumaniani

Georgia: The exhibition Mai Mkhithariani—”Visit of Komitas to Tumaniani”—was opened in the Scientific and Cultural House of Hovane Tumaniani.

It was dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the famous Armenian writer Hovanes Tumaniani. The exhibition will last for a week.

Hovane Tumaniani became a versatile artist – he wrote poems and stories. His stories are known as the best examples of Armenian prose. Also, his poems and fairy tales based on Armenian and Eastern legends are known to the general public (“One Drop of Honey,” 1909. ; “Guladi Nazara,” published in 1912. And others). 

It is noteworthy that Hovane Tumaniani was a dedicated defender of the brotherhood and friendship of Georgian and Armenian people, and he wrote several poems on this topic.

Georgian Minister of Culture and Sports Thea Tsulukiani wrote the exhibition’s opening. Among the guests were Nika Akhalbedashvili, Director of the Shalva Amiranashvili State Museum of Art, Representatives of the Armenian Republic in Georgia, Representatives of the Armenian Eparchy in Georgia, Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper “Vrastan,” Van Baiburt, Artistic Director of the Armenian Professional State Dramatic Theater named after Peter Adam, Tbilisi Armenak Bayand Uriani, director Luiza Khachaturova, representatives of the Armenian Diaspora and others.

The ensembles “Jeriani” and “Mushi” participated in the event.

Mais Mkhitariani has been the leading painter of the Petro Adam State Armenian Dramatic Theater in Tbilisi since 2008.

He was born on October 4, 1962, in Tbilisi. From 1983 to 1987, he studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. Since 1983, the artist has participated in various exhibitions all over the world. In 1993, his personal exhibition was held in Tbilisi and Yerevan; in 2003, he had a personal exhibition in Moscow; and in 2023, he had an album presentation and a personal exhibition.

Mai Mkhitariani has staged several plays: “They Called” (dir. Armen Bayanduriani, 1992); “40 Days before the Ascension” (dir. Albert Safariani, 2003); “Autumn Sunset” (dir. Armen Bayanduriani, 2019); and “In the open sea” (dir. Armen Bayanduriani and Arthur Gaspariani, 2023).

Works on book illustration as well: Artak Voskanyan’s “Sayat-Nova” (2007); “The Gospel According to John” (2012); Grigor Movsisian’s “Birth of Wahagan or the Second Coming of Jesus Christ” (2012), Artak Voskanian’s “Judith” (2014); Khachik Harutyunian’s “The Lord Created” (2020) and many others.

It is worth noting that several documentaries and feature films have been shot about Mai Mkhithariani – “Self-portrait” (dir. Ruben Kochar, 2018).
