Abkhazia, Georgia: A fire broke out in a private house in the village of Saberio, in Gali District, in Abkhazia, which resulted in the deaths of five children. The tragic incident occurred on January 5, 2024, early morning.
During the investigation, the reports found that at the time of fire the parents of the children were not at home. The children’s grandmother was trying to light a stove using gasoline, which resulted in an uncontrollable fire in the house.
Emergency services were unable to reach the scene in time to extinguish the fire. The children, the eldest of whom was 8 years old and the youngest just 1 year old, died at the scene. The injured grandmother has been transported to a hospital in Gali for treatment.
Reports also found that the house belonged to the Cholaria family. Further details are being investigated. The head of the Gali administration, Konstantine Philia, was present at the scene.
Various other ministers expressed their condolences to the families and community affected by the tragic fire in the village of Saberio.
Prime Minister of Georgia expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of five minors. He mentioned that it was unbelievable to express in words the great pain that the tragedy in the village of Saberio in the occupied Gali district caused each of them.

On behalf of the Government of Georgia and personally, I express my heartfelt condolences and support to the families, relatives, and the entire community mourning the loss of these children,” stated Kobakhidze.
The Public Ombudsman of Georgia also extended condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased children.
The Public Ombudsman also highlighted the challenges in protecting the rights of the population living in the occupied territory of Georgia, especially the destitute and vulnerable groups, faced by them due to such a tragic event.
Salome Zourabichvili also extended her condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. “There are no words to express the pain of the tragedy that occurred in Saberio. I share the grief of the family and their loved ones,” Zourabichvili wrote on social media.
It should also be noted that the Georgian government always makes certain efforts to protect the people from such serious tragedies. In this case, also the government and the international community were trying continuously and were using all their mechanisms to protect human rights in the occupied territory.
