Tbilisi: Irakli Koplatadze, who served as ambassador to Slovenia has announced his resignation from the foreign services. He has served almost 18 years in different capacities under the foreign ministry.

He took to his official Facebook page to make this announcement. In the Facebook postv he statedv “It was a great honour for me to serve the country for a long time. Moreover  it was also a proud moment that during his tenure in the service, the country achieved the status of candidate country of the European Union after a long struggle.”

Referring to Georgia’s journey towards EU integration  he thanked his colleagues at the international level, the ministry’s employees, and embassies in different countries for help.

At the same time  he extended his gratitude to all ministers, prime ministers, and presidents of different countries  with whom he worked for their cooperation as well. He specifically stated “I am not saying goodbye. We’ll meet in service of the country. Where are we going? To Europe!”

The former ambassador also expressed dissatisfaction over the threatening calls he received from Azerbaijani numbers because he expressed his dissent. However the ambassador’s reference to threatening calls is not clear that whether these calls were part of the same campaign under which many other people across the country  received calls from foreign countries where the caller used abusive language.

On the other hand, in the morning, President Salome Zurabishvili addressed Georgian Ambassadors via video conference. They are ambassadors serving in Europe and the United States and are currently in Berlin at Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s call for a conference.

During his address to the Ambassador  she added that we are in the middle of the path to Georgia’s integration with EU. “I just wanted to say that Georgia’s ordinary citizens will be facing extraordinary choices on October 26 when the country will go through the process of the Parliamentary election, but for you (Ambassador) the time to choose is right now.”

Irakli Koplatadze was the  ambassador to  Slovenia since 2018; before Slovenia, he  headed Georgia’s diplomatic mission in Turkey.
