Geisenheim University Students Visit SRCA

The students of the Viticulture-Enology Department of the German Geisenheim University visited the Jighaura and Tsilkani scientific bases of the LEPL Agricultural Scientific-Research Center on a study visit.

The students of the Viticulture-Enology Department of the German Geisenheim University visited the Jighaura and Tsilkani scientific bases of the LEPL Agricultural Scientific-Research Center on a study visit.

The Scientific Research Center for Agriculture (SRCA) shared glimpses of the students’ visit on its official Facebook Page on August 2, 2026, Sunday. A small note about their visit was shared along with its glimpses.

During the visit, the director of the center, Professor Levan Ujmajuridze, introduced students to the activities of the center and ongoing scientific-research projects in the field of vineyard-winemaking. Special attention was paid to the rich genetic heritage of Georgian grapes, the diversity of local varieties, and their protection and research.

At the Jighaura base, the students visited the collective vine plantation, research laboratories, and the vine and wine museum space. The head of the Center’s Viticulture and Wine Research Service, David Chichua, gave a presentation to the students on traditional Georgian winemaking, qvevri winemaking, and winemaking technologies. During the visit, the students tasted wine samples made from rare Georgian grape varieties at the Jighaura base.

Students visited the laboratory of tissue culture (in vitro), where they learned about modern methods of plant microclonal reproduction and laboratory activities. They also visited the Prof. Soil Research Laboratory named after Ivane Sarishvili, where information about the main directions of soil analysis and its practical importance was received. During the visit, students also visited greenhouses of year-old crops.

The visit was carried out within the framework of the International Summer Educational Program of Geisenheim University and aimed at sharing international experiences in the field of vineyard-winemaking and deepening students’ practical knowledge.
