Georgia: 4 foreigners arrested, charged with selling drugs online

The Interior Ministry of Georgia said that the Georgian police apprehended four foreign citizens on Thursday in Tbilisi for selling drugs online.

The Interior Ministry of Georgia said that the Georgian police apprehended four foreign citizens on Thursday in Tbilisi for selling drugs online.

The individuals have been charged for selling drugs online and violating the law. Moreover, the Interior Ministry revealed that the arrest was made by the officials of the Central Criminal Police Department as well as with the officers of the Customs Department of the Revenue Service.

In addition, police officials have told that they had arrested a Brazilian citizen identified as F.S for selling drugs on an online platform.

According to an official statement released by the Ministry of Interior Affairs, the investigation shows that the arrested person, F.S, was trying to smuggle drugs, up to one kilogram of cocaine, hidden in his body, into Georgia through Tbilisi International Airport.

Furthermore, the Ministry also said that the police officials had prevented the illegal sale of drugs on an online platform and seized substances in various parts of the capital.

Besides this, police had also arrested three international citizens for the latter crime, with up to 250 gms of methadone-containing substances and cash seized during the raid made at residential houses of the accused.

According to Georgia’s criminal code, this crime is punishable for up to 20 years of prison.

So far in 2020, according to a report, the drug users in Georgia has spent over $1.5 million online between February to August.

However, in 2018, Georgia became the first soviet country to legalize the consumption of marijuana. The court ruled that punishing a person for consuming cannabis restricts the person’s freedom as the plant can only potentially cause harm to the drug user. The court also ruled that punishing a person for using pot will only be allowed if their actions put a third party at risk. But the selling and cultivation of marijuana will remain a punishable offence.
