Nino Tandilashvili attended the working meeting on Climate change. Representatives of the central and local governments were also present.
She said that “climate change is not a challenge for a separate part of society, it is a universal problem and dealing with it requires a united effort.”
Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Mzia Giorgobiani, Acting Director of the USAID Office for Economic Growth Annie Stid, and Head of the USAID South Caucasus Regional Water Management Program (SCRWM) Eric Viala also attended the meeting.
Nino Tandilashvili stated “In recent years many important steps have been taken in terms of sustainable water resources management, including the adoption of the law on “Water Resources Management”. This law is fully in line with both national needs and challenges as well as with the obligations Georgia has made with international agreements, and associations agenda. Climate change is not a challenge for a single part of society, it is a universal problem and dealing with it requires a united effort”.
At this meeting, the importance of the Georgian Water Resources Management Law was discussed, and USAID’s South Caucasus Regional Water Management Program was presented. The program’s main goal is to establish effective cross-border cooperation and promote water management in the South Caucasus region to ensure regional stability and sustainability. The estimated budget for the 5-year program is $20 million and will go toward stimulating local communities and deploying new technology.
“Georgia is the leader in terms of reforms carried out in the direction of economic development. Therefore it has an important role in strengthening cooperation between the region’s countries. USAID’s water management program will help drive regional dialogue, implement institutional reforms, and raise public awareness about the sustainable use of water resources,” added Annie Stid, acting director of USAID’s Office for Economic Growth.
