Georgia: The issues of the preparation of the sustainable management strategy of sludge in Georgia were discussed at the working meeting held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meeting on its official Facebook Page on September 23, 2025. The Georgian Ministry shared a small note about the discussions held at the meeting, along with its glimpses.
The project, which is being implemented with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), involves the elaboration of legislation, regulations, and an auxiliary manual for the management of sludge in Georgia, as well as the preparation of a pilot project to determine the benefits of sludge reuse.
Thr Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Solomon Pavliashvili thanked the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for its financial support and drew attention to the importance of the issue.
According to the European Commission’s 2023 Enlargement Policy Issues, one of the recommendations for Georgia, as a country with candidate status, is to regulate sewerage lamps as a result of cleaning the running water in the country.
At the same time, it is worth noting that the development of a circular economy is a priority for the country; therefore, the issue is critical and complex.
“The work process continues, there are many challenges, however, I think, with the active involvement of the state, international partners, and the private sector, we will be able to create an effective legislative framework in the form of technical regulations, – said Solomon Pavliashvili.
Within the framework of the presentation of the meeting, the assessment of the current state of sludge management in Georgia was presented on the example of Gargaban, Ureki, Zugdidi, Abastumani, Kobuleti, Adlia (Batumi), Anaklia, Tskaltubo, and Telavi.
