Georgia: The Deputy Director of the Agricultural Scientific and Research Center of Georgia, Nodar Khatiashvili, and Livestock Department Specialist Giorgi Bezhanishvili were in Portugal on a study tour.
It should be noted that, along with the deputy director, the representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and Food and the Agricultural Organisation of Georgia (FAO) were present there.
The Scientific Research Center for Agriculture (SRCA) of Georgia shared the glimpses of the study tour on its official Facebook Page on Saturday, September 20, 2025, Saturday. The SRCA also shared a small note about the tour along with its glimpses.
The educational tour involved sharing Portugal’s experiences in the fields of animal certification systems, animal research, cryoconservation of genetic resources, breeding programs, and conservation of rare species. Special focus on In-vivo and Ex-situ conservation practices, which serve to preserve endangered local species.
During the visit, the delegation members held meetings at the Directorate-General of Food and Veterinary Portugal (DGAV) and the National Research Institute of Agriculture and Veterinary, inspected agricultural farms and associations, and visited on-site laboratories.
The Deputy Director of the Agricultural Scientific and Research Center of Georgia, Nodar Khatiashvili, noted, “The experience gained during the educational tour was particularly valuable in terms of familiarizing with Portugal’s politics, legislation, and practical approaches to livestock management.”
According to him, emphasis was placed on modern systems of animal certification, research, and construction. The knowledge gained will contribute to the phased implementation of the animal certification system in Georgia, which will ensure the protection of local breeds, effective management of construction activities, and strengthen the capacity of farmers.
The visit was carried out within the framework of the project “Development of Farm Management Systems in Georgia“, which is carried out by the cooperation of the Agricultural Scientific and Research Center of the SCP and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The project aims to develop the animal certification system, effective management of construction activities, and protection of local genetic resources in Georgia.
