Georgia: On the occasion of Environment Protection Day i.e., on June 5, the final event of the project “Protecting the Nature of my Country” was held organized by the Agency of Protected Areas (APA).
In order to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection and protected areas in the younger generation, on the initiative of the Agency of Protected Areas, the project “Protecting the Nature of my Country” is held annually throughout the country.
Within the event, the winner of the contest “Protected Areas – Their Importance and Benefits”, schoolchildren living near protected areas were awarded. This year, 500 students participated in this competition and presented essays, paintings, photos, and posters. Thematic works reflected their attitudes and views on the importance and benefits of protected areas.
The Deputy Chairman of the Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia, Tamar Khakhishvili appreciated the schoolchildren in his speech and also noted the importance of trees. He stated, “The role of protected areas is of utmost importance in maintaining a healthy environment. That is why the Agency of Protected Areas is actively working on establishing new protected areas, expanding existing ones, and protecting-monitoring biodiversity.”
According to him, it is important to involve young people in this process, so that future generations can get more information at an early age, fall in love with the unique nature of Georgia, and become its protectors.
In addition, it should be noted that a number of events were held by the agencies within the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture to celebrate World Environment Day. The National Forest Agency, within the framework of the volunteer platform “Friend of the Forest”, held a large-scale cleaning campaign in the area of the Cross Monastery.
The National Environment Agency celebrated World Environment Day in Batumi, with a demonstration of a drone collecting waste in the water and a beach cleaning campaign.
The Center for Environmental Information and Education (EIEC), in the yard of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, held an infographic and exhibition of their works for schoolchildren.
