The First Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Nino Tandilashvili, spoke at the ministerial meeting held within the intergovernmental negotiations aimed at preventing plastic pollution in the Swiss Confederation, Geneva.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meeting on its Official Facebook Page on August 13, 2025, Wednesday. The Ministry also shared a small note about the meeting along with its glimpses.
Nino Tandilashvili emphasized the progress that Georgia has made in the direction of waste management at both the political and legislative levels. According to him, the country has taken important steps towards developing a national waste strategy and phased implementation of the system of expanded manufacturer liability in accordance with the EU-Georgian Association Agreement. He also spoke about the challenges of effective waste segregation and the need for investment in the process.
Georgia, like other countries, is committed to reducing plastic pollution, which will benefit both the environment and economic activities.” However, there is a need to work together to overcome structural, financial, and institutional barriers.
“We therefore believe that the new international treaty aimed at preventing plastic pollution should include robust financial support mechanisms, which will enable countries to adopt new approaches to waste management, improve existing waste management infrastructure, and implement new technologies,” said Nino Tandilashvili.
As the First Deputy Minister noted, with the involvement of the business sector, the manufacturer’s expanded liability system for the collection and recycling of various specific waste will be gradually implemented.
“We firmly have a policy of certain sustainable development and effective use of natural resources.” Part of our strategic vision is to promote green growth, EU proximity, and inclusive development. “We see it as an opportunity to create green jobs, reduce dependence on raw materials, empower local entrepreneurs and modernise infrastructure,” the first deputy minister said.
