Georgia: The National Statistics Office of Georgia proudly celebrates the 105th anniversary of establishing the National Statistical Service of Georgia, a significant milestone in our history.
The country’s first statistics service was created on July 25, 1919. Accordingly, this date is related to the start of the production of official statistics in Georgia.
In May 1918, after the declaration of independence of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, the issue of creating a statistical service was on the agenda. This was based on statistical indicators of the socio-economic character of the country’s ongoing processes.
At present, the statistical activities are carried out by an independent body of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat). It carries out its functions by considering international methodology and standards.
On July 25, 1919, a pivotal step was taken to elevate the statistical authority to a higher rank. This was achieved through the adoption of the Law’ Establishment of the Central Statistical Committee by the Founding Council of Georgia. This committee was tasked with managing statistical works of any state importance, a role it continues to fulfill with dedication.
On July 25, 2024, Saqstat became an independent public law attorney, upholding its work to the highest international standards, methodologies, and best practices. Their commitment to the fundamental principles of producing official UN statistics and the Code of European Statistical Practice ensures a high quality of professional independence, reliability, objectivity, protection of confidentiality, and effective use of resources.
