Georgia: Watermelon imports are expected to expand rapidly in 2021, according to EastFruit analysts. Last year, large early led to poor pricing for local farmers last year.
Over the previous eight years, imports of watermelons to Georgia have risen annually by 1,200 tonnes on average. A high volume of imported watermelons was registered in May last year – 2,500 tonnes; the average imports in May over the last seven years is 500 tonnes. This year, official trade data reveal that the nation is seeing unusually high volumes of imports in the month of April.
In April 2022, Georgia imported 540 tonnes of watermelons, which is 10% higher than in the Aprils of the preceding eight years combined. Imports have begun to ramp up this year, and market competitiveness may be considerably fiercer than last year. Surprisingly, trade data reveals that prices are higher in April 2022 than they were in April 2021, but imports are four times greater. The need for early imports in Georgia is increasing.
Iran was the largest importer in April 2022, with 530 tonnes imported. The average price was $0.18/kg, according to trade statistics. These costs are normally high in the early season, but they drop by half or more in three to four months.
Georgia imported 10,500 tonnes of watermelons last season. When supplies from Georgian manufacturers become available in July and August, imports usually drop.
