Tbilisi: Georgian Minister of Education and Science Mikheil Chkhenkel opened an event dedicated to the 30-year cooperation between Georgia and Emory University (USA), attended by US Ambassador Kelly Degnan and Emory University Vice President Philip Waynewright for Global Strategy and Initiatives.
Mikheil Chkhenkel addressed the audience with a welcoming speech and spoke about the development of education and healthcare spheres, highlighting the importance of long-term cooperation with US based University.
Mikheil Chkhenkel: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to mark this remarkable date and sum up 30 years of fruitful cooperation with Emory University – a number of projects accomplished and significant achievements.”
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Georgia’s main strategic partner, the United States Government, which has contributed greatly to the development of our country’s education system. Another notable example of this is the cooperation between Georgia and Emory University, within which various important directions have been introduced and developed in the fields of education and health care in Georgia.
It is noteworthy in collaboration with the University, a project that started in 2013 – the American program of a diploma physician, which has been implemented since 2013 in partnership with Tbilisi State Medical University.Â
Also, I especially wish to highlight the 2019 Ken Walker International University, providing opportunities for aspirants to receive higher-quality education in healthcare and medicine.
Professor Ken Walker, who visited our country 30 years ago, has made a special contribution to strengthening cooperation between Emory University and Georgia and implemented a number of large-scale projects in healthcare and education development. “
At the end of the conversation, the minister once again emphasized the United States’ support for education and noted that since the establishment of Emory University, more than 300 citizens of Georgia had been given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and receive a high-quality education in different directions.
Also participated in the event dedicated to the anniversary: Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Nunu Mickiewicz, employees of the organization “US Army Medical Research Directorate in Georgia”, US Walter Reed Army Research Institute, Emory University Medical School, Grade Memorial Hospital Representatives of Pulmonology Service and other invited guests.
The event dedicated to the 30-year cooperation between Georgia and the US-based University was held by Emory University Medical School, Tbilisi State Medical University, Partners for International Development Corporation and Ken Walker International University.
Emory University in Georgia, with the financial support of USAID, the National Institutes of Health (NH) and other organizations, has been implementing projects in the field of education and medicine since 1992. Among them is the American program of a graduate physician, which has been carried out in cooperation with Tbilisi State Medical University since 2013. Today, it is the most demanded medical, educational program in Georgia, based on the curriculum of the Emory University Medical School, adapted in accordance with Georgian and international educational legislation and requirements.
On the initiative of Emory University, Archil and Sergo Kobaladze Medical Staff’s Professional Skills Development Center was established in Georgia, which offers doctors, nurses and nurse assistants various medical and nursing educational programs, the opportunity for continuous professional development.
 In addition, with the support of Emory University, in 2021, the foundation of the “Early Child Development Academy” was laid on the basis of Tbilisi Medical University. The aim of the academy is to develop and develop the necessary skills for children and adults with different types of developmental disorders aged 2-14 to help them realize and integrate their abilities into the social environment.
Starting in 2020, Emory University’s School of Medicine has begun working with Ken Walker International University to support its development and achievement of goals. Through the partnership, the University provides support for Ken Walker International University’s educational and learning processes development of academic and administrative staff, including exchange programs, providing them with opportunities needed for individual career development and other professional advancements. Ken Walker International University will host its first influx of students in 2022.
It is noteworthy that since 2017, Emory University has allocated more than 7 million US dollars to support projects implemented in Georgia by USAID.
