Tbilisi: Georgia, on Tuesday, has been elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, with the voting held in New York, within the framework of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In the voting process, Georgia secured 178 votes. This is the second time that Georgia has been elected as the member of United Nations Human Right Council and would remain for the term of 2023-2025.
The Human Rights Council elects its members from the regional groups as per the geographical principle.
The UN Human Rights Council is the most important mechanism for improving international standards of human rights protection. It is elected for a three-year term, consists of 47 member states, and its function is to ensure the universal protection of human rights, to respond to human rights violations in the world and to develop relevant recommendations. The Council carries out its activities in Geneva”, stated the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
The foreign ministry of Georgia termed it an important success to be elected as member of Human Rights Council.
“The membership in the Council provides additional opportunities for the country, together with the international community, to be more actively involved in the decision-making process on issues on the global agenda of human rights protection”, said the ministry.
