Georgia: Environment Protection and Agriculture Ministry controls vehicle’s pollution

The Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture’s Employees under the Department of Environmental Supervision have taken the initiative to control the emissions of moving vehicles since September 4 of the current year i.e. 2023. They have highlighted the four major cities of Georgia - Tbilisi, Rustavi, Kutaisi and Batumi.

The Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture’s Employees under the Department of Environmental Supervision have taken the initiative to control the emissions of moving vehicles since September 4 of the current year i.e. 2023. They have highlighted the four major cities of Georgia – Tbilisi, Rustavi, Kutaisi and Batumi.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia is a governmental agency within the Cabinet of Georgia. It is in charge of regulation of economic activity in the agricultural sector of the country and environment protection. The main purpose of the ministry is to increase the sector’s production capacity. Gigla Agulashvili is the head of the Ministry. The Organization is located in Tbilisi.

The Ministry had given some important information regarding their control over emission of vehicles as follows:-

  • In 2 months after the law came into force, from September 4, 2023 to November 4, 2023, One thousand eight hundred thirty nine (1,839) offenders were fined by the moving crews of the department for non-compliance with the emission norm of motor vehicles.
  • Most – 803 violations were recorded in Tbilisi, 407 – in Kutaisi, 358 – in Batumi, 271 in Rustavi.
  • Out of one thousand eight hundred thirty nine (1,839) penalty receipts one thousand five hundred forty four (1,544) receipts are fixed in the name of a natural person; in two ninety five (295) cases, employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision fined legal entities.
  • It is also worth noting that one thousand nine (1 009) penalties were issued against drivers of light cars and eight hundred thirty (830) – truck and minibus drivers.

For non-conformity with the legal norm of the emission of motor vehicles, in the case of a natural person, the fine is Hundred (100) GEL for the first time, Three hundred (300) GEL for the second time, and Six hundred (600) GEL for the third time.

In the case of a legal entity, the fine is Five hundred (500), Fifteen hundred (1500) and Three thousand (3000) GEL. If the fine is paid within 10 days, the amount of fine will be reduced by 20% for the offender.

Citizens can check fines on the website of Department of Environmental Supervision and payment of fines can be done through the website of Ministry of Internal Affairs.
