Tbilisi: Erekle Kezherashvili will head Railway Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia. He was appointed as a result of a competition for “Public Law Legal Person” according to the Georgian law.
Erekle Kezherashvili has significant experience in the management and coordination of reforms and large projects in the field of transport, including within the framework of the reform of the railway transport sector.
During his work in the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, he was “Support for the Approach of Georgia’s Legal and Institutional Framework with EU Law in the Field of Rail Transport”, Leader of the EU TWINNING Project on Georgia, Member of Administrative Committee of International Rail Transport Organization (OTIF) and Baku-Tbilisi-Karsi A member of the line coordinating board.
The Railway Agency was formed in May 2023 on the basis of amendments to the Georgian law and the Georgian Railway Code, which were implemented within the framework of the railway transport sector reform initiated in order to implement EU legal acts taken into account of association agreement.
The goal of this reform is to create an institutional and legal framework in the field of railway transport in order to create a European model railway system in Georgia, which will increase the efficiency and transparency of the sector.
The main subject of the agency’s activity is the technical regulation and supervision of the field of railway transport within the framework of the powers granted by the legislation of Georgia – in the first stage in the direction of ensuring railway safety, transportation of dangerous goods, railway operators, infrastructure managers, railway training institutions and train drivers.
