Georgia holds meeting on Missing Persons from Armed Conflicts

Under the leadership of Georgian Minister of State Tea Akhvlediani, the regular meeting of the Inter-Commission of Search and Relocation of Persons Missing as a Result of Armed Conflict was held.

The Minister of State opened the meeting of the Interim Commission and focused on the special responsibility of the humanitarian process of searching for missing persons as a result of the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008, the special task of ensuring its subsequent sustainability and effectiveness, locating the fate and location of missing persons, and supporting their families from an S point of view.

The meeting, according to the agenda, discussed the progress made, current issues, and future visions of the missing persons. Special attention was given to the transformation process of the program, based on the findings and recommendations of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the increased role of government agencies, and ways to implement relevant functions.

“At today’s meeting of the Commission, together with all the state agencies involved in the state program for searching for missing persons, we summarized the results achieved through close and coordinated activities and discussed specific issues that will be aimed at further improving the effectiveness of the program.”

“It was in this context that we discussed the recommendations of the International Committee of the Red Cross at the current stage of the program’s transformation, the optimal ways of their possible consideration, which address primarily the interests of the families, the specifics of the program’ s operation in Georgia and the expectation of the successful implementation of the search for missing persons in the society,” – the Minister of State Tea akhvlediani said.

The Inter-Agency Commission was established on October 24, 2019, by the Georgian Government. With the efforts of the agencies involved in the process and under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the process of searching, identification, and transferring to their families of the armed actions of the 1990s and the Russia-Georgian war in August 2008 is actively underway. So far, 323 nests have been identified and given to families.
