The LEPL National Environmental Agency of Georgia shared the details of the new regulation via its official Facebook Page on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
The regulation also establishes a clear procedure for collecting and recording information about existing groundwater wells, helping authorities maintain accurate data on water resources across Georgia.
The new rule was approved by Resolution No. 424 of the Government of Georgia and determines the procedures for the state registration of groundwater fresh drinking water wells.
The Resolution “On Water Resources Management” is one of the important normative acts developed for the implementation of the Law of Georgia. The purpose of the regulation is to systematize the collection of data necessary for the sustainable management of groundwater fresh drinking water resources and create a relevant information base.
The enactment of the new rule is an important step towards the protection and sustainable management of groundwater fresh drinking water resources. The data obtained will contribute to the monitoring of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of water bodies, assessment of the current state, and development of relevant recommendations.
According to the resolution, the Geology Department of the National Environmental Agency will carry out the state registration of wells. Based on the information obtained as a result of the registration, a hydrogeological database will be created, which will be periodically updated.
