Georgia, Japan Explore Stronger Trade Ties and Direct Flights

The Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meeting on its official Facebook page on July 9, 2025, Wednesday. The Georgian Economy Ministry also shared a small note about the meeting along with its photographs.

Mariam Kvrivishvili thanked the Japanese side for supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for the help Japan has been providing since Georgia’s independence.

The meeting discussed the priority directions of trade-economic relations between Georgia and Japan. Positive trends in bilateral economic ties emerged after the implementation of the mutual investment agreement between Georgia and Japan. At the same time, it was emphasized that there is great potential for economic cooperation, including trade, energy, transport and logistics, information technology, tourism, civil aviation, marine, investment, and other sectors.

It was also emphasized that the existence of an action platform for discussion of economic issues between countries in the form of an intergovernmental economic commission, within which it would be possible to resolve all priority economic issues between Georgia and Japan. As noted, the Georgian side has already submitted to the relevant authority of Japan a draft agreement on economic cooperation, which considers the formation of a commission.

Special attention was paid to the importance of signing a free trade agreement with Japan. It was noted that Japan is an important economic partner for Georgia and the existence of such an agreement would contribute to deepening economic ties.

The meeting discussed the importance of starting direct air travel between Georgia and Japan, which will contribute to the development of cooperation between the countries, especially in the field of tourism. There was also attention on signing an agreement on cooperation in the field of civil aviation.
