Minister of Education, Science and Youth Givi Mikanadze met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Georgia, Ishizuka Hideki, and the President of the University of Tsukuba, Keisuke Nagata.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia shared glimpses of the meeting on its official Facebook Page on August 4, 2026, Tuesday. The Georgian Education Ministry also shared a small note about the meeting along with its glimpses.
The parties discussed the issues of deepening cooperation between Georgia and Japan in the fields of education, science and innovation. Special emphasis was placed on expanding partnerships between higher education institutions, strengthening international scientific cooperation and promoting joint scientific research.
The Minister provided the guests with information about the ongoing large-scale reforms in the education system and the initiatives to be implemented.
The meeting focused on collaboration with leading Japanese research centers (KEK and J-PARC), which the parties say is one of the most successful examples of scientific partnership.
Givi Mikanadze emphasized the importance of long-term friendship and partnership with Japan. As he said, it is symbolic that the meeting coincided with the celebration of the 34th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Japan.
The Minister noted that cooperation with the University of Tsukuba is particularly important for the Ministry, as it will contribute to further strengthening the international integration of higher education and science in Georgia.
In turn, the Japanese side thanked the Minister for the visit. The President of the University of Tsukuba, Keisuke Nagata, expressed full readiness to cooperate with higher education and scientific institutions of Georgia.
At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed on the implementation of joint projects in order to expand the future partnership. The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth Zviad Gabisonia and Director of the Shota Rustaveli Georgian National Science Foundation Teimuraz Dochviri.
