Georgia: The treatment for congenital heart disease is now available for children living in the region at the University of Geneva Hospital.
The Georgian Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons, Labor, Health, and Social Welfare posted information about this facility on its official Facebook site on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. Posting this on social media was mostly done so that the majority of people could learn about it.
Specifically, from 2026, the Ministry of Health, within the framework of the State Program of “Referral Services”, will finance operations that are currently not possible in Georgia and which are recommended abroad by the relevant Medical Commission and specialists in the field.
Treatment will be provided at Geneva University Hospital, using modern high-tech equipment and involving appropriately qualified medical staff.
Regarding this issue, Minister of Health Mikheil Sarjveladze met with pediatric cardi surgeon in Switzerland, medical head of pediatric cardi surgery at Geneva University Clinic, Tornike Sologashvili.
At the meeting, the parties discussed the importance of strengthening international collaboration in pediatric cardiac surgery, modern approaches to managing complex cardiac diseases, and opportunities associated with access to high-quality treatment abroad.
It was noted that the involvement of the Ministry of Health in the “Convention on Children’s Cardiac Surgery” has significantly expanded the geographical area of the program and made the service accessible to registered children under the age of 18.
During the meeting, it was emphasized that this program has been successfully implemented by Tbilisi City Hall since 2022, and it applies to persons under the age of 18 registered in Tbilisi. This successful practice laid the foundation for the further expansion of the program throughout the country.
The parties also discussed prospects for future collaboration, experience sharing, and steps aimed at promoting the development of services for pediatric cardiac surgery. The Georgian Deputy Minister of Health Irine Tsakadze attended the meeting.
