Tbilisi: Levan Davitashvili Georgian Economy Minister while thanking the European Union Leadership, said that Granting the candidate status to Georgia is historic. He also congratulated the citizens for this achievement.
Levan Davitashvili on Friday said the European Council’s decision to grant the country the EU candidate status was a “very important historic decision” and a “new stage” for Georgia to make progress in every field of life.
Speaking further, Levan Davitashvili said In his briefing to the media at the event which was held on Freedom Square in the capital at the initiative of the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, “I would like to congratulate the country’s citizens on this decision and further noted Georgia had been waiting for this “for centuries” as an effort to return to the European family.
Davitashvili stressed while speaking further that it was a “significant” day for the country as it was united around one “great goal” – the EU membership with all dedication and determination.
Additionally, he said, “For all of us, being in Europe is a civilisational choice, and therefore it supported economic, pragmatic goals. So, it is a really significant day in the life of Georgia, a great day for all the Georgians, and we were all emotional when Georgia officially received the EU membership candidate status a day ago. This is the beginning of a new stage in the history of our beloved country”.
The Minister also pointed out that Georgia had been following the European integration path since the year of 2014 and had fulfilled all its obligations undertaken under the Association Agreement, adding Georgia was an “outstanding” country among the Eastern Partnership member states.
He also highlighted the various commitments fulfilled by the Georgian government “thoroughly” and extended his gratitude to the civil servants for their contribution to this process.
It is to be specifically mentioned that the president of Georgia has taken a personal interest for granting candidate status to Georgia by the European Union. She also led a successful campaign under the name “Our Voice to Europe “.
Under the campaign millions of people signed the petition to demand the Candidate status for Georgia.
