Georgia loses the first match of Acropolis Tournament to Türkiye

Tbilisi: Georgia's national basketball opened their campaign at Acropolis International Basketball Tournament with a defeat against Türkiye in the Greek capital city of Athens on Wednesday. The national team trailed at a score of 88:101 against its counterparts Türkiye.

Tbilisi: Georgia‘s national basketball opened their campaign at Acropolis International Basketball Tournament with a defeat against Türkiye in the Greek capital city of Athens on Wednesday. The national team trailed at a score of 88:101 against its counterparts Türkiye.

Ilias Zouros has been the coach of the team. Georgian team had advanced in the first quarter of the match by 10 points. However, a turnaround by the other team in the second period had the victory snatched away from the hands of the Georgian team.

The dynamic performance by Cedi Osman in the third quarter of the match proved to be the game changer for Türkiye.

Although Georgia tried to come back and somehow managed to narrow Turkey’s lead to only 3 points (88-85) after Tornike Shengelia’s free throws, Alperen Sengun scored 5 points in a row, Osman added a triple, and thus, turned the fate of the game into favour of Türkiye.

The Georgian national team would go head to head with Greece in the upcoming match on Thursday. Following this, Poland in their last match of the tournament on Friday.

Before the game, the coach of the Georgian team, Ilias Zouros, stressed that the main focus would be improving the quality of the team’s performance in the game as the official matches at the qualifying stage of the World Cup and Eurobasket.

Further, the team would look upon trying various new approaches in attack as well as defence.

Also, the friendly matches have given the team to learn and enhance their performance in the upcoming games. The team is riding high on spirits, despite the defeat and is all set to face Greece on Thursday.

The Georgian team had defeated Greece and Serbia in 2017 and won the Acropolis Tournament, back in 2017 under the guidance of Ilias Zouros.
