Tbilisi: Maia Bitadze, Chairman of the Committee for Protection of Environment and Natural Resources, presented the Committee’s 2023 work plan. Before that, the chairman of the Committee summed up the activities done in 2022. The report presented the activities of the Committee over the past year.Â
Including legislation discussed and passed to create new protected areas and improve air quality, ongoing bills – domestic animal protection, inertial, sustainable construction waste management, and water resource management.
“Our strategic priorities for the next year are primarily environmental protection and conservation, while second is low-emission and climate-friendly urban and rural development.” The third strategic direction is the green economy, and the fourth direction is promoting the circular economy.
The Committee also has two consecutive strategic directions, which will be considered during the implementation of the four priority directions. These include the promotion of environmental management mechanisms and implementing the horizontal principle of environmental democracy in all other strategic directions.
This means that every bill the Committee plans to discuss and initiate, all the oversight activities we do over the next year, will be tied to these strategic directions.
Our main direction remains environmental integration in cities and adding these principles to all legislation and supervisory activities related to the green economy and its various strategic directions said Maia Bitadze.
The Committee heard information on the Center for Environmental Information and Education for the 2022 report and 2023 action plan. Tamar Aladashvili, the director of the Information Center, presented.
Tamar Aladashvili talked about the main strategic directions of the Center’s activities and noted that these directions are: promoting environmental and agrarian education at national and local levels; raising awareness on environmental and agricultural issues; increasing public engagement in the environmental decision-making process, strengthening the Center’s capabilities and organizational development Situation.
The Committee today also heard information about the updated national strategy for waste management 2016-2030 and the national action plan for waste management 2022-2026.
Alverd Chanxeliani, the head of the Waste and Chemical Management Department, presented the information.
The rapporteur focused on the strategic goals of waste management and noted that the implementation of the strategy will contribute to the implementation of waste prevention, waste recycling, waste energy recovery systems in the country. Also to establish a higher awareness of the society in the country.
