Tbilisi: A man has been charged with premeditated murder and violating the restraining order as he stabbed his girlfriend in front of three minor children on Sunday in the eastern region city of Telavi, stated the prosecutor’s office of Georgia on Tuesday.
The office has condemned the Telavi district court’s decision of rejecting its motion in October asking for pre-trial detention of the suspect after his earlier arrest on charges of domestic violence and threatening the victim along with her family. The court, instead of detaining the accused, had released him on a ₾2,000 ($707) bail.
The prosecutor’s office also stated that it had immediately appealed the ruling to the Tbilisi court of appeals; however, no decision was made before the suspect broke into the rented residence of his 26-year-old girlfriend and inflicted fatal injuries to her neck and chest in the presence of her children.
The suspect, who had not been sentenced to detention by the court, was given the opportunity to brutally assault his girlfriend. This fact once again emphasises the need to take the strictest measures against femicide, which implies coordinated work, public involvement and united efforts”, the office said in its comments.
Currently, the assailant is facing 16 to 20 years of imprisonment or a life sentence for his criminal actions.
