On March 11, the opening event of the International Consumer Rights Protection Week was held by the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency of Georgia. The other agencies that cooperate the organization of the events held are the National Bank, the State Insurance Supervision Service, the Communications Commission and the National Food Agency.
This important event was opened and the participants were addressed by the Chairman of the Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency Irakli Lekvinadze. According to Irakli Lekvinadze the first national strategy for the protection of consumer rights is in the final stage which is being developed with the joint efforts of regulatory agencies and covers the period of 2024-2026.
The document outlines the goals and objectives of the consumer rights protection policy of the Goevernment as well it also discuss the challenges faced by various stakeholders and includes the necessary measures needed to achieve a high level of consumer protection in Georgia.”
According to the chairman of the agency during the reporting period the agency considered more than 700 cases , 65% of which were related to the fact of online trading. Most of the decisions we made, in favor of the customer, almost 70% ended with a conditional commitment agreement. The fact of violation of the right of the consumer group was confirmed in 58 cases and in 6 cases it was not confirmed.
According to its own statement in 2023 the Agency for Competition and Consumer Protection became a partner of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) which unites the agencies and member organizations of more than 80 countries working in this direction all over the world and is an international platform for important interaction between successful countries.
Within the framework of the week meetings with customers are planned on March 12 in Gurjaani on March 14 in Kutaisi, and on March 15 as International Consumer Protection Day in Batumi. The purpose of the week planned for March 11-15 is to strengthen public awareness in the direction of consumer rights.
