The Georgian Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth honours Pavle Ingorokva’s memory. One hundred thirty years have passed since the birth of prominent Georgian philologist, publicist and social activist Pavle Ingorokva, and 40 years since his death.
Pavle Ingorokva was interested in the history of Georgia and medieval Georgian literature since childhood; therefore, he began to study early Georgian literature thoroughly from a young age—his first work – “Old Georgian Spiritual Poetry” – was published in 1913. In 1916, Tamar King’s “Chorus Vardzisani” was published.
His articles were actively published in the Georgian press until 1923. The magazine “Caucasian” was founded in 1924 and banned in 1925. Later, in 1928, on his initiative, the publishing house “Georgian Book” was founded.
He devoted a significant part of his multifaceted achievements to Shota Rustaveli and “Vepkhistkhaosani”, which resulted in creating a number of works, including: “Rustaveliana” (1926), “On Rustaveli” (1927), “Rustaveli and his poem” (1937), “Literary legacy of the Rustaveli era” (1940-1941), “Shota Rustaveli ” (1937); by his editorial office twice (1953 and 1970) published the critically-setted “Vepkhiskhaosani” I text you.
“Giorgi Merchule” is one of his fundamental works, on which the researcher worked almost all his life. During this research, he found samples of rhythmic poetry and tried to decipher the old Georgian sanoto system. He searched 31 hymns and 1200 hymns.
In 1975, the work “The Founders of New Georgian Literature” was published – monographs on Nikoloz Baratashvili, Ilia Chavchavadze and Akaki Tsereteli. The fundamental research about Abkhazia belongs to him, which created many obstacles for the author. Pavle Ingorokva became a member of the delegation of the Georgian Democratic Government during the negotiations with Turkey in 1919 and played an essential role in protecting Georgian borders.
Pavle Ingorokva died in 1983 at the age of 90, and he was buried in the Pantheon of Didube writers and public activists. Georgian Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth honors Pavle Ingorova’s great merit in front of Georgian culture, homeland, and his bright memory.
