Georgia: A national programme for internal auditors in the public sector is planned to be launched in 2023, which aims to establish a high standard in the public sector and ensure continuous professional development of internal auditors.

This process will contribute to the improvement of the quality of audits, as well as the sustainable development of the qualifications of internal auditors. With the issued recommendations, it will be possible to bring additional benefits to the budgetary institutions.

The launch of certification of internal auditors is another step closer to harmonization with EU requirements and international standards, a crucial part of state internal control reform.

The development and implementation of the Internal Auditors Certification Program in the public sector will be coordinated by the State Internal Control Department (Harmonization Center) of the Ministry of Finance.

In order to facilitate the implementation of the National Certification Program for Internal Auditors, the first meeting of the Interagency Working Group for the Development and Implementation of the Certification Program for Internal Auditors was held, chaired by Deputy Minister of Finance Mikheil Dundua.

The interagency working group was established by order of the Minister of Finance, and its members are the Head of the Civil Service Bureau, the Director of the Academy of the Ministry of Finance, the Head of the Internal Audit Department of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Head of the State Internal Control Department and the Budget and Legal Departments.

Notably, the working group also includes the German International Cooperation (GIZ) Public Financial Management Advisor and OECD / SIGMA policy advisors.

At the meeting of the working group, the Department of State Internal Control presented an action plan for the certification of internal auditors by year. It was noted that in September of this year, the working group would present a consolidated concept of certification of internal auditors.
