Georgia: Opposition Memebr of Parliament assaulted

In a shocking incident the members of the opposition of Georgia were physically assaulted by some persons. Opposition member of parliament Lago Khcichia was present in his office when the alleged incident took place.

In a shocking incident the members of the opposition of Georgia were physically assaulted by some persons. Opposition member of parliament Lago Khcichia was present in his office when the alleged incident took place.

It is to be specifically mentioned that Member of Parliament from the opposition Girchi party Iago Khvichia was allegedly physically assaulted in the party’s office by some unknown armed person. MP sustained an injury on his face also especially nose.

According to available information the alleged assailant is the brother of a citizen whom Biblical Freedom ,a church founded by Girchi ordained to help avoid compulsory military service. Moreover the alleged assailant reportedly protested Biblical Freedom’s activities. Moreover he also accuses it of doing “the devil’s job”.

Member of parliament further stated that “I called on him to get out, but he swung his arm and punched me in the nose and injured me seriously Khvichia told media. The accused was also beaten by MP and his colleagues as well in a retaliatory action.”

After the attack Khvichia attributes the assault to the “dirty propaganda of the ruling Georgian Dream and the Patriarchate”.Khvichia says he is cooperating with law enforcement He also expressed hopes that all the accused would be soon revealed by the Police and other law enforcement agencies as well.

It is to be noted that one of the biggest critical of the compulsory military service Girchi founded the church Biblical Freedom in the year of 2017 to take advantage of the existing norm in the Georgian legislation that exempted priests from conscription.

Moreover Biblical Freedom ordained thousands of young men allowing them to avoid compulsory military service. In September 2023 the Parliament adopted a new defense code that limited exemptions to priests of the Orthodox Church of Georgia.

The members of the parmilanet as well as other politicians also criticised the attack as well. They said that the ruling party needed to expose the accused as soon as possible.
