Georgia: The Scientific Research Center of Agriculture participated in the seminar held under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources (ITPGRFA).

On November 5-7 of this year, a working seminar was held in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources (ITPGRFA), with the participation of representatives of the Balkan, Central Asia, and the Caucasian countries.

It is worth noting that Georgia has been a member of the International Treaty on Genetic Resources for the Future (ITPGRFA) since 2019.

The Director of the Scientific and Research Center of SIP Agriculture, National Coordinator of Plant Genetic Resources, National Liaison Person of ITPGRFA Levan Ujmajuridze, and Genetic Bank Manager Tamar Jinjikhadze participated in the seminar.

Levan Ujmajuridze presented to participants the experience of Georgia in the process of implementing the international treaty; reviewed the stages of ratification, main challenges related to plant genetic resources search, protection, conservation-distribution, and species adaptation caused by climate change.

Focused on the need to increase seed production in the country and the importance of government involvement, discussed challenges, achievements, and essential needs that are prerequisites of raising awareness, strengthening cooperation, and sustainable development of the agro sector.

Tamar Jinjikhadze presented a presentation at the seminar within the framework of the current FAO/BSF project – “Strengthening the links between In-situ, on-farm and ex-situ conservation forms”, which is implemented by the Scientific and Research Center of Agriculture of Georgia. His report would address the progress of the project, the results achieved, and the plans for future cooperation.

The 11th session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the governing body of the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources will be held at the end of November this year in Lima, the capital of Peru, where Georgia will participate.
