Georgia: The Georgian Minister of Education, Science, and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, met with representatives of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the Technical University of Georgia.
“We all agree that the issues that are addressed under the concept of reform must be passed, and the results are vital for the further development of our country.”
It was important that I listened to the positions of representatives of both Universities on specific issues, and only after that could I propose a concrete proposal for the processes to merge the two Universities.
The Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, mentioned, “First of all, it should be noted that this week Parliament discussed and adopted legislative amendments based on the concept document already signed by the President. One of the norms, as a result of these changes, involves the implementation of the reorganization process, which means the Minister’s appointment and completion of the interim council.”
“Both universities will be represented with equal powers in the Council, paritetically. It is important that the introduction of the candidates for the council will be done by the universities themselves,” he added.
Givi Mikanadze noted, “We proposed the universities start the process of reorganization, to form a temporary governing board, which will lead the process of unification of universities for 2 to 2.5 years.”
On the other hand, the representatives of both universities expressed the desire to create a working group that will discuss all the issues at the first stage, and based on the decision taken, they will take steps related to the reorganization process.
It should be noted that they all agree that meetings of this format are the most important. They asked the participants of the meeting to rethink, analyse, and discuss its purposefulness.
“At the same time, we have established a position that we will reaffirm all the said positions in our team and discuss what more can be offered to society regarding this process,” said Givi Mikanadze.
