The Georgian prosecutor’s office has charged one person with a cyber attack. He is accused of unauthorized access to the computer system of Silknet.

In this regard the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted an inquiry on received the information from the initial sources. The investigation carried out by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Service, established that the accused committed an illegal cyber-attack. The accused through unauthorized access to the web platform belonging to the subject of the critical information system—”Silknet” illegally copied the electronic copies of the identity documents.

These are the documents used by the company’s users to verify their identity when purchasing, changing or porting a SIM card. He gained access and tried to sell them illegally on the Internet which is a grave offence and a threat to the country’s national security.

It is to be specifically mentioned that the detainee was charged under Article 284, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The article stands for the offence of intrusion into the computer system without permission, committed against the subject of a critical information system. If the accused is found guilty there is a provision for three to six years of punishment.

On the other hand the prosecutor’s office has already applied to the Tbilisi City Court with a motion to use imprisonment as a preventive measure for the accused. This will also prevent the accused from tampering with the evidence or influencing the witness of the crime.

The criminal investigation continues to extract the truth so that the details of the offence can also be ascertained. The prosecutor’s office representative also said that cybercrime had become a big threat to the country’s personal and national security. They demanded that the central government introduce strict measures in the future to reduce cybercrime across the country.
