With the changes to the “Law on Wine and Wine“, from May 1, 2026, the industrial vineyard will be possible to grow only with the consent of the National Wine Agency.
According to Levan Mekhuzla, agreement is easy to get, and it only applies to the vineyard, which plans to build a vineyard after May 1st of this year.
The Chairman of the National Wine Agency, Levan Mekhuzla, said, “All regulations introduced in the field of winery serve to improve the quality. The reform ensures both the investor and the consumer, considering the objective conditions when wine consumption in international markets has decreased, and competition has increased.”
“Soil laboratory analyses are required to get the agreement. There are laboratories in Georgia that do soil analysis very successfully and efficiently, and are accredited in this field. One of the requirements is that the groundwater level should not be less than 1 meter, which is completely fair, because the vineyard built on the groundwater yields poor-quality grapes. To accept the agreement, it is also necessary to confirm the ownership of the plot,” Levan Mekhuzla noted.
According to him, those who want to grow vineyards will not have a problem with choosing grape seedlings.
“It is prohibited by law to grow only hybrid varieties, and there will be no restrictions on other varieties.” We have relationships with up to 20,000 vineyards throughout the harvest, and practice mistakes when vineyards are grown in chaff, or at high altitude above sea level, which serves to increase quantity, not improve quality. Our goal is to improve the quality of Georgian wine and improve the positioning of Georgian wine on the global market, – stated the chairman of the National Wine Agency.
According to him, the agency has the authority not to give consent to the generation of the industrial vineyard if the applicant cannot provide the complete documentation stipulated by the establishment of the industrial vineyards, or the documents presented do not comply with the requirements of this rule.
