Georgia signs agreement with FAO

To promote competitiveness in the agricultural sector as well as to strengthen food production the Georgian Ministry of the Environment Protection and Agriculture signed an agreement with US FAO(food and agriculture plant).

Tbilisi: To promote competitiveness in the agricultural sector as well as to strengthen food production the Georgian Ministry of the Environment Protection and Agriculture signed an agreement with US FAO(food and agriculture plant).

The agreement is signed under the name of “Inclusive Rural Development and Sustainable Agriculture”. The agreement will further promote the farmers to apply new technologies, increase farmers’ knowledge, alleviate rural poverty, and support gender and social balance. The Georgian Minister of Environment and Agriculture Otar Shamugia and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative in Georgia Raymond Yele were present during the signing ceremony of the agreement document.”

 

Speaking on the occasion the Georgian minister Otar Shamugia said “I would like to express my sincere thanks to FAO as well as the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) for their support and partnership. As you know after receiving EU candidate status, we have to implement several recommendations, effective and timely implementation is our agenda and priority.”

On the other hand, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative in Georgia Raymond Yele, thanked the minister and noted that the signing of the new project is proof of the country’s support and future cooperation with FAO. He further underlined that the FAO supports Georgia’s process of approaching the European Union. According to his statement, the signing of a new agreement will start a new stage of development in the agricultural sector of the country.

As per further information the Project target groups from two pilot municipalities will be selected at the initial stage of the project through consultation with the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, FAO, ADC, and stakeholders. Moreover it will also involve the farmers, farmers associations/cooperatives, rural households, educational institutions, private sector representatives, and family farm owners as well.

Both sides expected Postive results of the cooperartion agreement in near future.
