Tbilisi: A Georgian parliamentary delegation, chaired by speaker Shalva Papuashvili will be attending the inaugural Crimean Platform Parliamentary Summit on Tuesday. The event will be hosted in the Croatian capital of Zagreb, keeping in sight the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The Georgian Parliament, on Monday, confirmed the arrival of Georgian delegates in Zagreb to hold meetings alongside the international event, which will bring together 43 delegations of 32 parliaments, five international parliamentary organisations and 26 heads of the Parliament to focus on the Russian invasion of Ukraine as well as the illegal annexure of Crimea in 2014.

Commenting about the event, Nikoloz Samkharadze, the chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s foreign relations committee, stated that the delegation had been invited to the summit as a country that supports Ukraine as the number of participants consisted of the members of the European Union and the United States.

“It is important for Georgia to take part in this summit, although we will use this format not only to support Ukraine but also to hold bilateral meetings. Of course, we will be meeting with host country representatives, the chairman of the Czech Parliament, as well as with the vice-speaker of the Parliament of France, the vice-speaker of the European Parliament and others,” stated the MP.

The delegation, having parliament vice-speaker Archil Talakvadze, Papuashvili and Samkharadze as its members, has already met the head of the Croatian Parliament, Gordan Jandrokovic, on Monday and discussed Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations and bilateral matters. The visit of the Georgian officials will be completed by Wednesday as per the schedule.

The Crimean Platform works as a newly formed international consultation and coordination format that Ukraine has initiated to increase the effectiveness of international response against Crimean occupation and security threats that Russia poses.

The first meeting of the platform was held in August 2021.
