Georgia: The film premiere, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Georgian composer Meri Davitashvili, was held in the National Archive Cinema Hall.
With the support of the Ministry of Culture, Dimitri Butliashvili directed a documentary film dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous Georgian composer Meri Davitashvili. The film was shown in the cinema hall of the National Archive of Georgia.
Georgia’s Minister of Culture and Sports, Thea Tsulukiani, attended the event. The composer’s family, relatives, and representatives of the art field also participated in the evening.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia honors Meri Davitashvili’s memory and outstanding contribution to the development of musical art.
The completion of the documentary “And So I Became a Child” was made possible by the promotion of the Ministry of Culture. In particular, the project won the “Promotion of Documentary / Science-Popular Cinema” competition.
This competition aims to support the development of science fiction and documentary films and encourage the creative work of freelance artists and private studios.
The film presents the life of the brilliant children’s composer, Meri Davitashvili, and her beloved and familiar musical works.
Meri Davitashvili has been a teacher at Tbilisi Conservatory since 1973, a professor (1994), and an associate professor (2006).
The composer’s work is versatile and combines orchestral, chamber-instrumental, opera, and group music. She created orchestral suites “Gelati” and “For Good Morning”; symphonic picture “Morning in Bakuriani”; “Water and Ant” for symphony orchestra and reader; instrumental concerts: “Fantasy for piano and orchestra,” “Poem for violin and orchestra”; piano trio, string quartet, 20 pieces for piano, more than 50 group pieces, as well, romances by Titsian Tabidze, Murm Or on the poems of Lebanidze, Alexander Sajaia.
Meri Davitashvili is the author of two children’s operas – “Kajanasa” (Libretto’s author R. Tabukashvili) and “Natsarqia” (Libretto’s author S. Cheishvili) Author; created more than 150 children’s songs, music for popular Georgian animated films: “Chkhikvta Korskili,” “Tsuna and Tsrutsuna,” “Nhevartsila,” “Sataguri” and others; wrote music for several TV films or drama performances; also, created children’s vocal cycles. Famous composers actively cooperated with Tbilisi, Borjomi, Gori, Tskhinvali, and Kutaisi puppet theaters.
It is meaningful that in 1972, Mayor Davitashvili founded Children’s and Adult Music Week, which was given the name of a composer in 2010.
Meri Davitashvili was a member of the Union of Composers of Georgia (1968 to 1990—Secretary of the Board). In 1981, she was awarded a State Award after Shota Rustaveli, and in 1994, she received the Jakob Gogebashvili Award. In 1997, the composer was awarded the Order of Honor.
